Botox and Dysport

Neuromodulators like Botox® and Dysport® are used to relax the muscles of facial expression, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. One is never too young or never too mature to gain the benefits of a neuromodulator like Botox®. Neuromodulator injections have become one of the most popular, well-known, and well-studied cosmetic treatments for facial rejuvenation. Although neuromodulators are effective as a stand-alone, when combined with other treatments like dermal fillers, laser, or any of the numerous customizable treatments available, the results can be impressive but quite natural.

Neuromodulator injections have been FDA-approved to help diminish frown lines between the brows called the glabella, wrinkles at the crow’s feet area, and most recently for forehead lines. As a straightforward and relatively inexpensive cosmetic treatment that is performed in the office with no downtime, it is an effective and excellent treatment option. It has such a reliable and reputable track record that it often yields the highest patient satisfaction rate over any other outpatient cosmetic treatment. Although Botox® may be the most well-known among the injectable botulinum neuromodulators, other ones include Xeomin®, Dysport®, and Myobloc®.

The procedure involves injecting botulinum toxin at very low doses into the muscles of facial expression to weaken or paralyze them. Results take effect within 1-2 weeks and may be seen as early as 3-5 days. The effect of the toxin can last for up to 4-6 months. When implemented alone or in conjunction with other rejuvenation treatments such as dermal fillers, the wrinkles, lines, and furrows of the face appear diminished in severity and depth. More recently, neuromodulator injections have been used on a more off-label basis to treat the neck, chin, jawline, and lips. Other FDA-approved treatments include injections for hyperhidrosis of the underarm areas, the effect of which can last up to 6 months. Unlike neuromodulator injections for wrinkling, which is a cosmetic, out-of-pocket expense, Botox® treatment for hyperhidrosis may be covered, partially if not fully, by medical insurance.
